theNEWDEAL, Herbie Hancock (Roseland Theater, 020315): Rating: TTT++
theNEWDEAL started on time (9PM) and did a good job warming up for Herbie Hancock, for about 50 minutes. Herbie Hancock and his band played mostly new stuff (to promote the new CD, Future 2 Future), which is not really my favorite style of music (although the sound was occasionally similar to Four80East, which I like). I liked the message in Wisdom, though. It wasn't until a couple of minutes after midnight I heard something I recognized and liked (Butterfly), and after playing and old hit (Rockit), half an hour later, with the crowd for the first time being really exited and as loud as the music, the band thanked the audience and left the stage. The audience wanted more, of course, so they came back and played a number of variations on Chameleon for almost another half hour. After that I felt that perhaps it was worth $27, after all.

A wonderful concert, with hit after hit, starting and ending with What The World Needs Now Is Love, all in Bacharach's exquisite arrangements. We also got to hear Bacharach himself sing in Rain drops keep falling on my head, Alfie, A house is not a home, and as a bonus, The windows of the world.

2000

David Sanborn All Start Quartet (Nefertiti, 000718)

David Sanborn, together with Joe Sample (piano), Brian Blade (drums) and Richard Bona (base).
Rating: TTT++

Although Sanborn and Sample were good, the favourite of the audience clearly was Richard Bona. He appeared as the new, spontaneous talent on the way up, whereas Sanborn and Sample seemed to treat the performance more like a routine job.

Although David Sanborn was the only one of the four I was previously familiar with, the piano triggered occational deja vus. I later found out, searching the web, that it was some beats from a hit by Joe Sample called Hippies on the corner from 1995, which I obviously had heard many times without knowing neither its name or who performed it. It turns out that Joe Sample is rather famous too, and has amongst other things, played in a band called The Crusaders.

Joe Sample also made an album titled Sample This :-)
